counting coconuts

Literacy Focus: Comprehension Development and Thinking Critically
Math Focus: Multiplication
This is a funny tale of a monkey who wants to count all of his coconuts and uses skip counting to count them faster.
Instead of using my library card to check out a physical copy of this book, I used it to get free access to Tumblebooks. Tumblebooks is a great program that allows you to play an animated version of a picture book on your Smartboard. You can get this book for free by going to http://www.barth.lib.in.us/ and scrolling down to the bottom of the webpage. On the left hand side you will see several blue links inside of a black rectangle. Click on the blue Tumblebooks link. This link will log you on to Tumblebooks. From there, search "counting coconuts".
My students were able to listen to the story and make/confirm predictions. I followed the Directed Listening-Thinking Activity format. This book was above the instructional level of some of my students so that is why they were expected to actively listen to it being read out loud.
